This route showcases the diverse architectural evolution of our beacons from the iconic candy-striped tower of Green Point to the mid-century modern design of Milnerton Lighthouse.  Beyond the history, this tour is a photographer’s dream, pairing lighthouse selfies with the classic postcard vistas of Table Mountain across the bay from Blouberg Strand. It is the perfect blend of heritage and scenery, a compact yet powerful introduction to the guardians of the Bay.

Estimated duration: 4 hours

The Itinerary

Your tour begins with a personalised pick-up from your accommodation or other pre-arranged point.  First things first:  the safety briefing.  Then,  while traveling to the first stop on Signal Hill, I will introduce the theme of the tour:  the Lightkeeper’s Legacy.

We start with a breathtaking view from Signal Hill, looking out over Table Bay and specifically the Robben Island Lighthouse.  You’ll see the shipping lanes and habour that rely for safe travel and operation on this lighthouse and the other beacons we are about to explore.  Signal Hill provides a perfect location for geographical orientation for the day’s adventure.  Also, my late grandfather was the a lightkeeper at this lighthouse for a number of years in the 1960s and 70s.  I have some good stories to tell..

Para glider with a blue glider passes close by the lookout point of Signal Hill with the ocean and Seapoint in the background below.

Along the Mouille Point shoreline, we pause to view the rusted remains of the SS Athens. This 1865 shipwreck serves as a vivid reminder that the “Cape of Good Hope” was first called the “Cape of Storms” and the high stakes involved in maritime navigation before the era of modern signaling.

A view of the ocean at Table bay from the rocky beach with a glimpse of the Athens Wreck sticking out from the water.

Step inside South Africa’s oldest and still operational lighthouse. Distinguished by its vibrant candy-striped exterior, this beacon houses a fascinating museum. We’ll explore the evolution of light technology, from oil to electric lamps, from parabolic reflectors to massive rotating lenses.  Best of all, we get to climb up to the lantern room at the top.  There, we will get close up view of a Fresnel lens and step out onto the gallery  for a panoramic view of the sea and the Green Point promenade.

A close up view of the lantern room, and the Fresnel lens, of Green Point Lighthouse as it is being viewed from the balcony.

Moving along the coast to Woodbridge Island and Milnerton Lighthouse, we encounter a striking contrast in maritime architecture. Built in the 1960s, this unique concrete structure reflects a more modern era of navigational beacons and signals. It offers a distinct photographic opportunity and showcases how signaling technology evolved to meet the needs of a growing 20th-century port.

Our tour would  not be complete without enjoying the iconic “postcard view” of Table Mountain. We stop at the white sands of Blouberg to look back across the water at the majestic Table Mountain, the city skyline and if we’re lucky, some kite-surfers. It is the ultimate vantage point to see the entire Table Bay theater of operations where lighthouses, shipwrecks, and history converge.

Many kite surfers out on the water at Blouberg Beach with Table Mountain in the Background.

The journey concludes with a scenic drive back to your accomodation/dropoff Point. We’ll use this time to recap the day’s highlights and share some final information about South Africa’s lighthouses and their keepers, leaving you with a profound connection to the maritime soul of the Cape.
